A few local Okinawa residents had a party on the weekend to celebrate central government plans to relent to pressure from Washington and build new US military bases.

“We love being shafted by Tokyo and having absolutely no say in the programs of our local constituency,” said one party goer.

“We can walk around this beautiful island and be constantly reminded about the pain of the war by seeing US commandos walking in the streets and Ospreys flying over our neighborhoods.”

The party raged on until the early hours but organizers were disappointed that one of the more than 20,000 US troops stationed in Okinawa failed to make an appearance.
