An elementary school homeroom teacher in Kanagawa prefecture on Friday was forced to leave an ALT alone with a class for five minutes causing the students to become instantly irrational – the police and fire brigade arrived shortly after the chaos broke out.
The incident resulted in two fatalities and ten injuries, with the mayhem quickly spreading to neighbouring classrooms. Local residents witnessed children running frantically around the schoolyard many covered with tribal-style body paintings.
School heads were forced to call a press conference to apologise and bow profusely, being careful to ensure the media got the perfect bowing money shot.
The school has been closed down temporarily and all students are receiving counselling.
