An Australian football fan thought he was against players who were perceived to be “sooks” and players who under the spotlight could be deemed to have been appealing for a free kick or two over the course of a season, but has discovered these were surrogate justifications for the perpetuation of opposing indigenous Australians voicing inconvenient truths.
The conflicted man, although believes himself not to be racist, disagrees with the Australian indigenous AFL player Adam Goodes being outspoken on continuing injustices and appalling conditions facing indigenous Australians in that he doesn’t want to hear about them.
The fan was reflexively against using a sporting platform to react to racial abuse by standing up for one’s culture and heritage as it shed light on an issue that “should not be talked about” – seamlessly marrying the “no politics at the dinner table” principle to race matters to further blur the debate.
“Using the fact that Goodes pointed out a young girl for racism during a game was also another red herring to divert the issue to insensitivity towards children and make her the sole victim of the affair,” the man said.
“But what really annoyed my mate – who I inadvertently supported – was when Goodes called Australia Day ‘Invasion Day’, he is proud of the way the we stole this land by boat two centuries ago and now vehemently reject anyone perceived to be trying to do the same,” said the AFL fan.
