A female mayor at the center of a fierce debate over allowing women into the sumo ring vowed Wednesday to build a dohyo in her own kitchen so she could be banned from doing the cooking.
“I won’t give up this time around – I’m looking forward to Kenji whipping up a nice seven-dish kaiseki cuisine,” said Takarazuka City Mayor Tomoko Nakagawa.
Nakagawa’s husband will also be condemned to a lifetime of dishwashing.
The mayor told reporters from this day forward a ban on women entering the dohyo ring in the Nakagawa household will be a “tradition, not discrimination”.
“And don’t forget my side dish of seaweed and edamame!” said Nakagawa.
