Areas around central Tokyo today experienced sudden bursts of “Gorilla Rain”.
Salarymen who didn’t take an umbrella to work today and were outside when the rain started falling became wet, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
“The phrase gorilla rain was first coined during the Vietnam War, somewhere in Gaikoku, when American soldiers were often ambushed by gorillas,” says JMA spokesman Shota Honda.
Salarymen have been advised to stay at work an extra few hours this evening.
“They might as well just take a little nap in the office and then start a new day’s work,” says Honda.
