A Japanese education institution has told a foreign woman living in Japan on Monday that they never want to hear her speak Japanese.
“You must never speak Japanese,” said head of a Yokohama high school in Kanagawa Prefecture, doing his bit to perpetuate the myth that foreigners can’t speak Japanese.
“But I’m living in Japan,” thought the long-term resident of Japan.
“How can I teach difficult grammar if I can’t explain it in a language they understand?”
Students in Japan are often conditioned into believing foreigners must be too stupid to learn the language of the country they are residing in.
The English teacher will now be unable to communicate with 85 per cent of the student population and 95 per cent of the teachers.
She does however speak in Japanese to her students when the Japanese homeroom teacher leaves the classroom.
